Google Chrome Manifest V3

From Adwiki

The third version of Google Chrome's Manifest limits the efficiency of ad blockers.

Limitations of Ad Blockers[edit | edit source]

Ad blockers work by frequently updating lists of URLs associated with ads, tracking, analytics and aesthetic elements on webpages that display advertisements. Under the second version of the manifest ad blockers are able to update these lists without updating the web browser extension itself. However, this has changed in the Manifest V3. Ad blockers are no longer able to update these lists, and in order to sync changes from the cloud the extension must be updated by the developer, uploaded to the Chrome extension store and be approved by Google before users are able to update their extension. This limits the power of ad blockers as advertisers and publishers are able to change their websites faster than the extension can be updated and in this way avoid ad blockers.

Alternatives to Google Chrome[edit | edit source]

Manifest V3 only applies to Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers. Firefox and other web browsers are unaffected.
